This may come as a shock to many home owners, especially those in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but your basement should NOT flood every time it rains this spring and summer. You should not live in constant fear that your  basement will flood or that mold will multiply like Gremlins who got wet. When it rains or snows or is damp, your basement should actually be dry.

Having a wet basement is not ok.

Groundwater exerts its own pressure on walls as it seeps through the earth. The water pressure against a basement when the soil is thoroughly soaked is called hydrostatic pressure. It can force moisture through pores in the basement wall and even crack or buckle the wall itself. Here again, proper drainage and basement waterproofing is the remedy.

Basement waterproofing saves the day by “pushing back.” It forces water away from the home and doesn’t allow it to penetrate the walls. This makes them stronger by now letting water inside of them. Waterproofing provides a shield-like protection Then, combined with a good drainage system, waterproofing keeps water away from the home completely. This eliminates the vast majority of pressure on the basement walls and let’s you know that your basement and foundation are safe and strong.
